About 3 years ago now I applied on a whim for a position to join the Square Enix Visual Works team in Japan. I expected not to hear anything back. I applied with a nice letter, a link to my folio and a 'top secret' link to copious amounts of NDA work.
I was blown away to get a personal response about 2 or 3 days later from one of the Art Directors on the team.
It was very blunt and very straight forward. He told me that I had a very unique style and that my artwork was great, He loved the heavy, solid feel and saturated colors but he had reservations about how far I could push it towards realtime cinematic work. The exact words he used to describe it was " Imagine an offline rendered character that we see today, we need to see that, modelled and textured in a stylised, fantastical final fantasy way but for use in realtime applications."
